The red status light switched over to green.

"We don’t have all day," I said, changing the subject. "So you might want to hurry up and get to work on that." I pointed to the access gate, which featured a keypad on the lock. "Is that your kind of thing, there?  Because I don't think swiping these access cards will get us through those gates."

To answer, he stepped over to the keypad, and after examining it for a moment with both of his hands and a furrowed brow, he typed a combination into the keys. The red status light switched over to green, and I heard the lock click open.

"That a good enough guess for you?" he asked.

"You’d make any double agent
memo proud," I said.

I pushed open the gate, and it made a loud creaking sound that echoed out across the laboratory yards.

"Hopefully they don't have security dogs around here," I said, looking around.

"And that the guards are all asleep, or at least as friendly as Sergei," Janine added.
